There is a never-ending debate as to what’s the best plant-based milk for coffee. This is because there are so many options when it comes to plant-based milk. From soy milk to almond milk and everything in between, there is no shortage of choices.

But what’s the best plant-based milk for coffee? This is a question that many people have been asking themselves for a long time. In this article, we’ll test various plant-based milks answering that question and giving you some tips on how to choose the best plant-based milk for your coffee.

Even though plant-based beverages like almond milk may be better than dairy products for bone health, if we’re talking about making healthy choices when choosing our morning brew, what’s best? We’ve compiled a list of plant-based milks so you know exactly which ones to avoid and which ones to look out for as alternatives to cow’s milk. Read on to learn more!

Plant-based milks

If you’ve been following along, you’ll notice these aren’t actual plants — they’re actually nut and bean derivatives that taste similar to real milk. All of them contain varying amounts of fat, protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. However, even though non of these come from cows, each type has different flavor profiles, consistency and nutritional values.

What is Plant-Based Milk

Almond Milk

One of the first plant-based milks ever created, almond milk has become increasingly popular over the past few years due to its low calorie content and high nutrient density. Almonds themselves only have 23 calories each, while 100% unsweetened almond milk contains around 80 calories. One serving of plain almond milk packs 4 grams of fiber and 10 percent of your recommended dose for vitamin B12 and folate.

Taste

Since almonds are technically legumes, many find their flavor too strong. Fortunately, there are other good tasting non-almond milks available today.

Almond Milk

Good for Coffee

We did not have much luck using Almond milk in our coffee. When adding it to our hot cup of joe it curdled very instantly… A bitter aftertaste is also left by the unsweetened almond milk.

Nutrition

Almond milk contains only one gram of protein per cup, so if you’re not drinking it with your coffee, consider adding it to smoothies or other meals like granola or protein powder that are higher in protein. Although it’s low in calories, it’s a good source of vitamins A and E.

Macadamia Milk

While macadamias are native to Hawaii, they were initially cultivated as ornamental trees. Nowadays, however, 90% of commercial production occurs overseas where labor costs are cheaper.

Taste and Good for Coffee

The proper amount of creaminess was achieved by using macadamia milk. If you’re looking for something that’s a little more flavorful than your average cup of coffee, this milk will do the trick. Also, we tested the company’s unsweetened creamer, which required a little more stirring to get it all together. Our favorite is the barista blend.

Nutrition

Despite the fact that macadamia milk has the most fat of any of the milks here, it is primarily monounsaturated fat, which is good for your health. Vitamins A and E, as well as antioxidants, are found in this food. In terms of calories, it’s in the center of the pack, but it doesn’t include any protein or fiber.

Oat Milk

Made from oats, oat milk is actually one of the most popular plant-based milk products in Japan. It’s also quickly gaining popularity in the Western world due to its tasty flavor and versatility. Since oats grow year round, it’s easy to obtain whenever you need it.

Taste

With a smoother texture than many of the other milks we tested, it’s also one of the more generously flavored options on our list. If you like a little bit of sweetness in your coffee, this may be the best plant-based milk for coffee that you try.

Although the Oatly brand is currently our personal preference, others swear by Chobani. Both are defiantly worth trying.

Nutrition

Oat milk is high in protein and has a good amount of fiber. It’s also rich in B vitamins. However, it’s low in calcium, so if you’re trying to avoid cow’s milk, this is probably the best option for you.

Pea Milk

As scientists work on making lab-grown meat a viable alternative to animal products in the future, the same thing is sought after for other types of foods, including dairy. As a result, pea milk — made from extracting the protein from peas — is starting to make waves in the market as an alternative to cow’s milk.

Taste

With a mild, slightly sweet flavor that reminded us of evaporated milk almost, it also had a creamy texture. If you like your coffee on the sweeter side without adding sugar, this may be your best bet.

Nutrition

Pea milk is low in calories and fat, but it’s very high in protein. It also contains a good amount of calcium. Vitamin B12, folate and other B vitamins are also found in pea milk.

Rice Milk

We have seen rice milk used as an alternative to cow’s milk since the 1960s. However, while rice is a staple food in many Asian countries, it’s not as popular in Western culture since people don’t consume it on a regular basis. As a result, rice milk isn’t recommended by many nutritionists and dieticians because of its poor nutrient profile.

Taste and Good for Coffee

The texture of the rice milk wasn’t as thick when compared to other milks, so it was a bit difficult to blend completely. It also curdled very quickly in our coffee, with little noticeable difference than if we had just used cow’s milk.

Nutrition

Rice milk is a low-calorie food where fat, protein, and vitamins A and E are the richest. It also has a good amount of calcium.

Hemp Milk

Like almond milk, hemp seeds are used as food additives in various foods across the globe. They provide essential fatty acids, amino acids, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens. Hemp grows quickly, requires little maintenance, and thrives well even during drought conditions. Plus, unlike almonds, hemp does not produce toxic mold when left outside during warm weather.

However, despite being such a common ingredient, hemp milk still hasn’t caught up in popularity compared to almond milk. Its main competitor is soy milk, another top choice for replacing regular milk in recipes. Because it’s lower in carbohydrates, soy milk is often preferred by vegetarians looking to maintain energy throughout the day.

Taste and Good for Coffee

We used Hemp creamer in our coffee. It went well with the coffee, but the flavor was a bit more bitter and off-putting than regular creamer. Aside from that, it was creamy in texture and a suitable animal milk substitute.

Nutrition

Healthy fats in the form of omega 3 fatty acids are included in hemp milk, making it an excellent source of nutrition for both the heart and the brain. In addition, each cup has 3 grams of protein. The recommended daily iron consumption for hemp milk is 10%, compared to cow’s milk’s 5%. Magnesium, an important mineral for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones, can be found in this superfood. To make your own, simply add some hemp hearts to some water, then drain the mixture.

Soymilk

The second biggest player in the plant-based milk game after almond milk is soy milk. While it shares the same general nutritional profile as soybeans, it differs significantly in texture. Like hemp milk, it tends to be thinner than regular dairy milk. And although it tastes very much like traditional milk, soy milk lacks certain nutrients, namely DHA and EPA.

In addition to having the lowest amount of carbs, soy milk is also usually less expensive than almond milk. However, keep in mind that purchasing raw soybean oil would bring down your savings further.

Our recommendation is to stick to full-fat versions rather than light varieties. When shopping at supermarkets, always ask store employees whether they sell whole, reduced-sodium, or no-added-sweeteners soy milk.

Taste and Good for Coffee

The texture of the soy milk was similar to cow’s milk, and it mixed well with our coffee. The taste was a bit bland when compared to other types of milk — finding a sweetener will improve the flavor for sure. This type is also higher in calories than other plant milks.

Nutrition

Soy milk contains a good amount of protein, B vitamins, and vitamin D. It also has calcium comparable to that found in cow’s milk.

Cashew Milk

Derived from nuts, Cashews’ unique consistency makes it stand apart from other plant-based milks. Although it takes longer to prepare, it ends up providing greater value overall thanks to its higher concentration of iron.

Taste and Good for Coffee

Compared to other plant-based milks, cashew milk was pretty easy to prepare and didn’t curdle, unlike other options. No separation occurred, and the flavor was distinct, but not bitter, as with the other varieties. However, the drink’s consistency was somewhat watery, so those who prefer creamy coffee may be disappointed.

Due to its bitter taste, cashew milk is mostly enjoyed chilled.

Nutrition

In addition to being low in protein and calories, cashew milk tastes great. Cashew milk (and other milk-alternatives) contains no cholesterol or saturated fat, therefore it may help decrease cholesterol by replacing cow’s milk. Vitamins E and A are also found in it.

Coconut Milk

It is known primarily for its ability to replace cream and butter in baked goods. Coconut milk is produced through pressing fresh coconuts into paste, then separating the liquid inside using centrifugal force. Unlike other forms of dairy, it’s rich in lauric acid (which helps fight infections), medium chain triglycerides (MCT) fats (great for maintaining metabolism levels), and saturated fat.

Since coconut milk is derived from a natural product, it’s free of cholesterol, sodium, and lactose. On the downside, it has almost zero dietary fiber, Vitamin E, or potassium. Additionally, it’s extremely caloric — a standard serving size is equivalent to two tablespoons of butter! To cut back on the fat, try mixing it with yogurt instead of drinking straight coconut milk.

Some experts recommend avoiding coconut milk altogether due to its heavy smell and tendency to spoil faster than other types. Others claim it gives off a great aroma once opened and refrigerated properly. Either way, you won’t regret giving Coconut Bliss brand a chance.

Taste and Good for Coffee

When we tried coconut creamer in place of regular cream, the result was excellent. A pleasant taste and a smooth texture distinguished it. Unfortunately, to no surprise, it added a coconut flavor to our coffee which I did not care for personally.

Nutrition

Coconut milk has the highest amount of saturated fat in a cup, with roughly 3 grams. When it comes to heart health, this is not the ideal option. Try to pair it with protein-rich foods whenever possible, as it doesn’t have any. Vitamins A, B12, and E are all abundant in this food.

Hazelnut Milk

Forget everything you think you know about hazelnuts, including how tasty roasted hazelnuts can be. Hazelnut milk is actually delicious!

Taste and Good for Coffee

When you consider whether hazelnut milk is good for coffee, keep in mind that it tends to have a sweet, nutty flavor that’s great on its own. When mixed with coffee, you’ll notice a subtle yet delicious hazelnut taste. One note is it did kind of create a slimy texture in our coffee, not sure if that is the right word for it but was undesirable. Those who enjoy a hint of nuttiness and who can locate a brand that blends well may find this to be an appealing option.

Nutrition

All of these nutrients can be found in hazelnut milk; it’s also low in calories. Because it is low in cholesterol and saturated fat and high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, it is good for your heart. However, it lacks protein, just like many other milk substitutes.

So What’s the Best Plant Based Milk?

When trying to find the best non-dairy milk, you should consider what you’ll be using it for. If you’re looking for a great coffee creamer, macadamia may be your best bet as it mixes in really easily and has a good flavor. In addition, oat milk is a great plant-based milk for coffee if you like it sweet and creamy. Both are our top picks and you should give both a try and see which suits your tastes.

Best Best Plant-Based Milk

If you’re more interested in adding more plant-based foods to your diet, both almond and soy milk are easy to find and have good nutritional profiles. We also like that they are often fortified with vitamins A and D. The almond milk we had some issues with it mixing evenly and it leaving a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

However, if you like your coffee on the sweeter side without adding sugar, pea milk is tasty without being overly sweet.

If you’re trying to cut down on animal products or just looking for a healthy alternative to cow’s milk, there are plenty of choices available besides the ones mentioned here.

Conclusion

As you can see, you have many options when it comes to finding the best plant-based milk for your taste, needs, and budget. If you prefer a creamy concoction, try oat or macadamia nut milk in place of your standard cream and shake a little honey into it (everything is better with honey!). With plat-based milks becoming more popular and easy to find, you should try all the different varieties and see which one you like best.

Hopefully, this article helps you to make the best choice for your needs and who knows, you may even find a new favorite!
